The Editors Guild of India (EGI) condemned an FIR against Supriya Sharma, news portal Scroll’s Executive Editor over her coverage of a Varanasi village
The Editors Guild of India Friday expressed concern over the FIR against news portal Scroll’s Executive Editor Supriya Sharma and its Chief Editor over a report published from Varanasi’s Domari village, calling it an “overreaction” that “will seriously undermine freedom of the media”. The Guild stated that the use of the sections of IPC and the SC/ST Act, and “criminal provisions of the law against journalists has now become an unhealthy and despicable trend that has no place in any vibrant democracy.”

The policy allows Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) administration to hound the newspaper and its key staff, allowing it to take legal action against them if found guilty after background verification
The new media policy announced by the J&K administration on June 2 gives it powers to decide what is “fake”, “unethical” or “anti-national” news, and to take legal action against the journalist or media organisation concerned, including stopping government advertisements and sharing information with security agencies. “J&K has significant law and order and security considerations, it has been fighting a proxy war supported and abetted from across the border,” reads the 50-page policy document that mostly deals with government advertisements to news organisations, adding, “In such a situation, it is extremely important that the efforts of anti-social and anti-national elements to disturb peace are thwarted.”

News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) President Arnab Goswami has penned a letter to Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar, requesting him to disallow attempts made by certain parties to stop news channels from publishing ratings measured by the BARC during the Coronavirus crisis. Goswami informed that these efforts were being falsely made in the name of the news broadcasting industry of India.
In the letter, the NBF President mentioned the tireless work done by broadcasters, which has won the praise of the Prime Minister in his recent video conference with owners and editors of some news channels.
